Liposuction

Liposuction is a plastic surgery that removes unwanted fat and contours the body.

It is a procedure where small incisions are made in hidden locations and tiny tubes or cannulas are inserted through the incisions to break down the fat and suction it out.

This body contouring technique can be used to sculpt different body areas including, abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, arms or neck.

Liposuction is an effective way of shaping the silhouette but it is not a weight loss solution.

What are the different types of liposuction?

There are different types of liposuction.

Traditional liposuction is performed with a cannula which is inserted through a small incision. It vacuums the fat layer beneath the skin and then pushed and pulled through the fat to break it. Finally, the fat is suctioned out with the help of vacuum pump or a large syringe.

Tumescent liposuction is performed under local anesthesia. It involves injection of fluid into the fatty areas before the fat is removed. The fluid contains saline solution, a local anesthetic and blood vessel constrictor. With this technique, fat is removed more easily and the amount of bruising is significantly reduced.

The super-wet liposuction is similar to tumescent only less fluid is injected.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

If you are bothered with stubborn localized fat deposits, liposuction may be a good solution for you.

To be a good candidate for this plastic surgery, you need to be generally fit and healthy.

Your weight should be stable because fluctuations may interfere with the final outcomes. You should also have elastic and firm skin and good muscle tone. Most importantly, to be a good candidate for liposuction plastic surgery, you need to have realistic expectations from the procedure.

On the other hand, you may not be a good candidate for liposuction if you have certain medical conditions like blood diseases, diabetes, or a poor immune system. Also, liposuction is not a good option for you if you still haven’t reached your ideal body weight.

What are the benefits of liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that significantly improves the appearance of different body areas. It removes stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to exercise and diet.

It creates better body contours and leaves minimal amount of scars.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY LAST? +

It depends on the type of the surgery, size of the treated area, amount of fat being removed and the type of anesthesia.

Tumescent liposuction may last for 4 to 5 hours, which is significantly longer than the duration of traditional liposuction.

WHICH TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS USED FOR LIPOSUCTION? +

Local anesthesia is most commonly used if the treated area is small and a small amount of fat is being removed.

General anesthesia is used if the treated area is large and a large amount of fat is being removed.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF LIPOSUCTION? +

Since liposuction is an invasive plastic surgery, it carries certain risks, including:

  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Infections
  • Skin scarring
  • Change in skin sensation
  • Skin discoloration
  • Skin contour irregularities
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Pain and discomfort
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF LIPOSUCTION LAST? +

The results of liposuction should last forever. Once removed the fat cells won’t grow back.

In order to maintain the results, it’s important to adapt healthy lifestyle habits like regular fitness regime and balanced diet.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE SURGERY? +

The price of liposuction depends on the type of surgery, its complexity and the length of the surgery.

WHAT DOES THE PREPARATION FOR THE SURGERY INCLUDE? +

Before the surgery, you need to have a thorough consultation with your Dr. Dragana Spica

Dr. Spica may require blood tests to determine if you are physically fit and healthy for the surgery.

Also, she will advise you to stop smoking and taking certain vitamins and supplements.

It’s important to arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY OF THE SURGERY? +

On the day of your blepharoplasty you are prepped for the surgery and given anesthesia.

Dr. Dragana Spica makes small incisions and inserts a suction device attached to thin cannula. She moves the cannula back and forth to break up the fat. Then she removes the fat with a suction pump or large syringe. She closes the incisions with dissolvable or non-dissolvable stitches.  She may place drainage tube in the treated areas to help with fluid accumulation. Also, she will place the treated areas into a tight elastic garment to help the skin adapt to new contours and reduce swelling.

When you feel comfortable, you are discharged from the surgical sites and given all the instructions for the recovery period.

IS THE SURGERY PAINFUL? +

Liposuction is not painful during the procedure. After the surgery, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort.

HOW LONG DOES THE RECOVERY PERIOD LAST? +

If your liposuction wasn’t very extensive you can go back to work after about 2 weeks. If your work is physically demanding you may need a few extra days off.

After a month you may still see some residue swelling which should finally resolve after about 6 months.

You can resume light activities but avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. After 6 weeks you can stop wearing your compression garment and resume all your normal daily activities.

WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED DURING RECOVERY? +

You should pay attention to the presence of swelling and pain.

Also, you need to keep the surgical site clean to prevent infection.

It’s important to have regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Dragana Spica.
