AFT is an innovative intense pulsed light (IPL) laser treatment, designed to improve your skin tone and texture. It is a non-invasive treatment that improves photodamaged skin and other superficial skin concerns. Dr. Dragana Spica is an expert in this treatment. She recommends AFT to her patients because it doesn’t damage the skin. Each pulse of light has a uniform energy density and therefore the pulses maximize your comfort and safety.
AFT photorejuvenation procedure is also called photo-facial because it addresses skin discoloration and photoaging at the top layer of your skin. The treatment is based on intensive pulses of broadband light that is non-invasive and safe. Dr. DRagana Spica uses a hand applicator that has a glass or laser surface tip. She presses the tip to the targeted areas and emits the light. The light heats the collagen beneath your skin and triggers its production. With time the newly built collagen fills in wrinkles and fine lines on your face, eliminates discoloration and flushing, and even reduces acne scars. AFT treatment offers you smooth and youthful-looking skin.
One of the biggest advantages of AFT is that it doesn’t damage the surface of your skin. IPL light goes deep into your skin and triggers collagen production and blood vessel constriction. The light is absorbed by melanin and it strategically damages the targeted area. The pigmentation is broken up but also the skin cells transform red, sun-damaged, and patchy skin into a smooth and even complexion.
AFT is very effective on light, untanned skin tones. You may be a good candidate for AFT treatment if you are bothered with sun-damaged and discolored skin. Also, AFT is a good solution for you if you want to reduce rosacea.
On the other hand, you may not be a good candidate for AFT treatment if you have a tanned or naturally darker skin tone. There is a risk that your skin pigment may change after the procedure. Also, if you are taking Accutane, you may stop for 6 months before you decide to undergo AFT treatment.
The results of your AFT treatment depend on the severity of your case. You will notice that your skin texture is even and smooth. Brown spots, wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scars will be significantly reduced. You will see the best results after 3 to 5 months, but your skin will noticeably improve after each session.
With AFT treatment you can effectively treat various skin concerns. Its broad-spectrum light technology addresses skin issues like:
Dr. Dragana Spica uses IPL to address different body areas, including your face, neck, or decolletage. This treatment is very effective in treating acne scars and inflammatory acne because the light reduces the bacteria that cause acne in the first place. It also reduces excess sebum, produced by sebaceous glands.
Another skin concern that is effectively addressed with IPL is rosacea. Different wavelengths reduce inflammations, redness, and uneven skin tone.
Before your AFT treatment, you are first consulted with Dr. Dragana Spica. She examines your skin and skin concerns to determine what AFT treatment can do for you. You should also talk about your medical history and your goals and expectations. Finally, Dr. Dragana creates a bespoke treatment plan for you, which includes the number of treatment sessions for the best results.
Dr. Dragana also advises you on how to prepare for your AFT treatment. Some of the recommendations include:
On the day of your AFT treatment, Dr. Dragana cleans your targeted areas and applies a topical numbing cream to them. This is to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. She also applies cooling gel to your treated areas and gives you protective eye shields. Then, Dr. Dragana scans the IPL applicator across your targeted areas. You may feel a light snap accompanied by a mild heat. That means that the laser is penetrating deep into your skin.
Your treatment session may last for about 60 minutes depending on the size of your targeted areas. When Dr. Dragana finishes the treatment, she wipes out the remaining cooling gel from your treated areas and applies a cold compress to them.
You may notice the initial improvements in your skin after just one treatment session. For the best results, Dr. Dragana recommends between 3 to 6 sessions, 4 weeks spaced out. Between two sessions your skin needs to heal especially if you are treating brown spots or acne scars. You can see the final outcomes after the last session and then decide to have touch-up sessions 2 or 3 times a year to keep the results.
Since AFT treatment is non-invasive you may experience only minimal side effects and almost no downtime. You can return to your busy schedule after the procedure.
Some of the typical side effects include redness and mild stinging for a couple of days. You may experience the feeling of mild sunburn. You may develop mild swelling, but you can easily handle it with cold packs.
After the treatment, you should avoid sun exposure for 24 hours because your skin will be sensitive. If you need to go outside, apply a high SPF. After a week, you may notice that some parts of your treated areas will become darker. These spots will peel off and reveal healthier and younger-looking skin.
