Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, is performed for cosmetic and functional reasons.
Reshaping the nose and technique to improve nasal breathing are done through small incisions on the bridge of the skin between the nostrils and several internal cuts.
This incision is made to access internal structures in the nose, such as bone and cartilage and to manipulate them.
Rhinoplasty is a sophisticated plastic surgery that improves the shape, proportions and size of the nose. By adding or removing cartilage and bone and adjusting the supporting structures, the nose can be shortened or lengthened and reduced or increased. Tip grafts made of cartilage can remodel the tip of the nose and make it more lifted, thinner, longer or shorter.
You are a good candidate for nose surgery if your nose is too small or too big compared to the rest of your face. Also, you may have this surgery if your nose is crooked and badly shaped, or your nasal tip is drooping, it is too elevated or too wide.
You might be good candidate for this procedure if you have nasal blockage and have trouble breathing or you have a birth defect that you wish to improve.
Regarding candidacy for rhinoplasty, you should be healthy. If you suffer from some bleeding disorders you may not be a good candidate for this procedure.
There are 2 different types of rhinoplasty:
Open rhinoplasty – the incisions are made outside the nose with a small access incision between the nostrils. This small incision is almost invisible when it heals.
Endonasal rhinoplasty – the incisions are made inside the nasal passages and are invisible after the surgery.
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that significantly improves the appearance of the nose. It improves the size, shape and angle of the nose.
Medical benefit of this plastic surgery is resolution of breathing problems, caused by nasal congestions and deformities.
The surgery may last between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the extent of your case.
General anesthesia is most commonly used.
Local anesthesia or IV sedation may be used in some cases.
Since rhinoplasty is an invasive plastic surgery, it carries certain risks, including:
The results of rhinoplasty are permanent.
The price of rhinoplasty depends on the complexity and the length of the surgery.
Before the surgery, you need to have a thorough consultation with Dr. Dragana Spica.
Dr. Spica may require blood tests to determine if you are physically fit for the surgery.
Also, she will advise you to stop smoking and taking certain vitamins and supplements.
It’s important to arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery.
On the day of your rhinoplasty you are prepped for the surgery and given anesthesia.
Dr. Dragana Spica makes the incision and reshapes your nose according to your treatment plan.
In the end, Dr. Spica places a splint outside your nose to support its new shape. She may also insert nasal packing to provide additional support.
When you feel comfortable, you are discharged from the surgical sites and given all the instructions for the recovery period.
Rhinoplasty isn’t painful during procedure. After the surgery, you may experience mild to moderate pain
It takes about 10 to 14 days to see the improvement in swelling and bruising.
For the first couple of days you can use cold compresses to reduce swelling and also sleep in a slightly elevated position for the same reason.
All the surgical packing will be removed from your nose after about a week. The splint and bandages will be removed after about 2 weeks.
You can return to your normal daily activities after 3 weeks.
You should pay attention to the presence of bruising and swelling, which should subside after several weeks.
Also, you need to keep the surgical site clean to prevent infection.
