Mole removal

Mole removal treatment is designed to remove atypical moles on your face, neck, arms, torso or legs. Dr. Dragana Spica might recommend atypical mole removal so that she can run a test to see if the mole is precancerous or malignant. You may also choose mole removal treatment if you are unhappy with the mole’s appearance or location.

Typical moles are flat or slightly raised, even in color, round, and don’t change their appearance. But if a certain mole starts to look atypical, Dr. Dragana may suggest you remove it. Also, you can remove the mole for cosmetic reasons.

It’s important to have regular mole checks to reduce the chances of developing melanoma. With mole checks, you get to know your moles and notice if some moles are changing. Also, to keep your moles healthy, you should avoid long sun exposure and use a high SPF.

What are moles?

Moles form when melanocytes or skin cells accumulate on the skin’s surface. These skin cells produce melanin or pigment that is responsible for skin color. Most moles are brown and harmless unless they change in size, color, or shape.

Moles can be of different types:

  • Raised
  • Flat
  • Fleshy
  • Atypical
  • Dysplastic

Moles can be different in color, shape, and size. Normal moles are symmetrical, defined, and even in color. Atypical moles are irregular in color, shape, and size. They may be bigger than 5mm. They are usually harmless but can turn into precancerous.

People with fair skin tend to develop more moles than people with dark skin. They need to check their moles on a regular basis.

Who is a good candidate for mole removal treatment?

You may be a good candidate for mole removal treatment if you are concerned about the moles that have changed their shape and color or if you simply don’t like the location and appearance of a certain mole. Mole removal treatment is safe and effective no matter what your skin type or skin color is. It is painless and doesn’t require any downtime. Plus, you can remove unwanted moles from any part of your body.

What are the mole removal treatment results?

The treated areas should fully heal in about a month. If you had a larger or deeper incision, the treated areas will heal in 4 to 6 weeks. In most cases, any scars created by mole removal treatment fade away naturally after about a year. Once your skin has fully healed, you shouldn’t have any evidence of the removed mole. Your skin should be smooth and even.

WHAT TECHNIQUES ARE USED FOR MOLE REMOVAL TREATMENT? +

There are several techniques for mole removal treatment. Dr. Dragana will determine which technique is the best in your case.

  • Shaving is a technique where Dr. Dragana uses a surgical blade to shave off the mole off your skin’s surface. This technique allows Dr. Dragana to get a sample of mole tissue and analyze it further. Also, her patients are happy with the results after the healing period is over.
  • Excision technique allows Dr. Dragana to remove the entire mole and stitch the skin back. This technique is usually used if the mole is atypical.
  • Freezing is performed with a small amount of liquid nitrogen to remove a mole that is noncancerous. This technique is also called cryotherapy.
  • Burning the mole with an electric current is performed to remove the upper layers of a noncancerous mole. This technique is often called cauterization.
WHAT DOES MOLE REMOVAL TREATMENT INCLUDE? +

Before your mole removal treatment, you first consult with Dr. Dragana Spica. She examines your skin and determines the best technique for removing the mole in question. She uses an instrument called a dermatoscope to evaluate the color and microstructure of the mole. She checks if the mole is benign or malignant.

Dr. Dragana marks the area around the mole and cleans it. You will receive an anesthetic, either topical or an injection at the targeted area. After removing your mole using the right technique, Dr. Dragana covers the treated area with a bandage.

The mole removal treatment is quick and can be done during your routine check appointment.

WHAT IS THE MOLE REMOVAL AFTERCARE? +

After your mole removal treatment, you will have a wound that needs to be cleaned, moisturized, and covered. You should change the dressing daily or as Dr. Dragana has instructed you. Once your wound has healed, you need to apply high SPF when going outside.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD? +

The recovery period depends on the size of the mole you removed and your general health. Generally, you should heal from mole removal treatment after 2 to 3 weeks. There is no downtime, and you can do all your routine activities.

Since mole removal treatment is a quick outpatient procedure, you can immediately return to work or social activities.

HOW TO MINIMIZE THE SCARS AFTER THE MOLE REMOVAL TRAEATMENT? +

If you had mole removal at a deeper layer, you may develop a scar. To minimize the scar and help your skin heal more quickly, you should avoid stretching the treated areas to keep your skin firm as it heals. Avoid direct sun exposure and always apply high SPF.

Once your stitches have been removed, you can massage the scar gently and use a nourishing lotion. Your skin will start to regenerate and produce collagen, which significantly helps with healing.
